Difference between version and

1	1 KnowWE is a Semantic Wiki for the development of knowledge-based applications.
2	2
3	3
4	4 !!! System Requirements
5	5
6	6 Installation of KnowWE requires the __Java SE Development Kit (JDK)__ in the version given on the [Downloads] page (JDK 25 for the nightly build, JDK 17 for the releases 2026.3.1 and 2026.4.1). A JRE is not sufficient since the release [Watney\|Watney - Release Notes]. The distribution runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
7	7 Use a current web browser, e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
8	8
9	9
10	10 !!! Installation
11	11
12	12 There are different distribution packages available for KnowWE. Older releases just provided the semantic wiki part of the d3web-KnowWE project (the folder {{KnowWE-Tomcat}} also referenced below). Since the release [Watney\|Watney - Release Notes], we switched to a more comprehensive distribution package, which also contains the core libraries of d3web (to embed and run d3web knowledge bases in your own software or app) and documentation and sources for both. So the downloadable zip file now contains the following folders:
13	13
14	14 * __d3web__ (Java libraries to embed and run d3web knowledge bases in your own software or app, also sources and documentation)
15	15 * __KnowWE__ (The wiki to create and test d3web knowledge bases, also sources and documentation)
16	16 * Licenses
17	17
18	18 To install KnowWE, just extract the downloaded distribution zip file to any location and then navigate to the folder KnowWE inside it. There, extract the file {{KnowWE-Tomcat.zip}} to the destination you want to run KnowWE from (like your program or application directory). Basically it is an Apache Tomcat ([http://tomcat.apache.org/]) web server, pre-configured with the KnowWE webapp.
19	19
20	20 \\Additional Notes:
21	21
22	22 * __Backup:__ If you are already using a previous version of KnowWE, move your old KnowWE folder to a different location first. Make sure that you are able to reuse the wiki articles you have created before.
23	23 * __wikicontent (optional):__ If you have used KnowWE before, you may copy your {{wikicontent}} directory to the unpacked {{KnowWE-Tomcat/wikicontent}} directory of the new installation.
24 −	* __Linux/Mac users:__ The zip file does not keep the execute permission of the start scripts. Set it once in the extracted folder with "{{chmod +x bin/*.sh}}".
24	+	* __Linux/Mac users:__ When unpacking the KnowWE-Tomcat zip file, sometimes the user rights are not correctly set. In this case, you may simply add read/write access to the entire KnowWE-Tomcat folder (including sub-directories), for instance by "{{chmod -R 777 *}}".
25	25
26	26
27	27 !!! Running
28	28
29 −	# __Java:__ Make sure the environment variable {{JAVA_HOME}} points to the JDK in the required version.
30 −	# __Start Tomcat server:__ In the extracted directory, navigate to the directory {{bin}} and start the server from there by calling the script {{startup.bat}} (MS-Windows) or {{./startup.sh}} (macOS/Linux). The wiki content folder is configured relative to the directory the server is started from ({{var.basedir = ../wikicontent}}), so start it from {{bin}}.
29	+	# __Start Tomcat server:__ In the extracted directory, navigate to the directory {{bin}} and start the server by calling the script {{startup.bat}} (MS-Windows) or {{startup.sh}} (Mac OS X/Linux)
31	30		# __Surf:__ Open your web browser and enter the link {{http://localhost:8080/KnowWE/}}

34	33 !!! Configuration
35	34
36	35 JSPWiki (on which KnowWE is build) provides the configuration file {{jspwiki-custom.properties}}, which can be used to configure stuff like the folder of the wiki files, templates, application name, and more. See [https://jspwiki-wiki.apache.org/Wiki.jsp?page=Configuration] for more information.\\

42	41
43	42 !!! Security
44	43
45	44 To manage wiki user and group rights, edit the file {{jspwiki.policy}}. See [https://jspwiki-wiki.apache.org/Wiki.jsp?page=Wiki.Admin.Security] for more information.\\

52 −	The default policy is meant for a local installation: everyone may view, edit, rename and delete pages. Before others can reach the wiki:
53 −	* Select a stricter policy shipped in the same folder by setting {{jspwiki.policy.file}} in {{jspwiki-custom.properties}}: {{jspwiki-readonly.policy}} (everyone may read, logged-in users edit), {{jspwiki-authonly.policy}} (only logged-in users read and edit) or {{jspwiki-authonly-roles.policy}} (logged-in users read, members of the group ''Editor'' edit).
54 −	* Let an admin approve new accounts, since everyone can register: {{jspwiki.approver.workflow.createUserProfile = Admin}} in {{jspwiki-custom.properties}}.
55 −	* Remove the sample accounts of the distribution: delete their entries from {{wikicontent/userdatabase.xml}} and from the group ''Admin'' in {{wikicontent/groupdatabase.xml}}, then set up your own admin as described in the [User FAQ].
